Mosaic Chair Project

With support from the John Michael Kohler Art Center, Aroha Philanthropies, and Art Links Sheboygan I helped create and facilitate an 8 week mosaic curriculum for 15 adults age 55 +. This series took place in a cozy workshop located in the James Tellen Woodland Sculpture Garden not far from the Art Center. After learning about the rich legacy of chair and furniture design in Sheboygan, whose nickname is “Chair City”, I decided to have each participant design and create their own mosaic chair inspired by a memory of a special chair or to Sheboygan itself. We used simple pine chairs and discarded surplus tile, glass, mirror and more. Each adult came with varying levels of artistic skills and experience and most had never worked with mosaic. Our 8 weeks together was challenging and transformative. We celebrated the completion of the chairs with an outdoor reception. The chairs became part of Art Links Sheboygan: Seasons of Growth exhibit at the John Michael Kohler Art Center on view from Oct 10th, 2020 - Jan 10th, 2021.
