This large mosaic mural was commissioned by Communication, a DIY all ages art and music venue in Madison, WI and partially funded by the SASY Neighborhood Association. I worked in partnership with Milwaukee-based artist Alex Hayes to facilitate the creation of a 40’ x 2.5’ foot long mural on their building facade with the engagement of members of the surrounding community. Through a series of workshops and information gathering sessions both in person and through social media, we asked the following questions: 1) What issues do you see your community facing? 2) How do you think art can play a role to combat these issues? 3) What elements can create inclusivity in your community? 4) What images, symbols, or motifs represent your ideal community? After gathering responses, we settled on an overall design highlighting phrases that best exemplified the feedback we were received - “Narratives Build Knowledge- All Hands on Deck.” We also asked workshop participants to paint their hands and self portraits on ceramic tiles to include in the mural. A flowing ribbon of mirror runs thru the entire length of the mural, reflecting the movement of passersby. This mosaic mural can be viewed on 2645 Milwaukee St Madison, WI 53704.
